First dates often involve a meal. However, very little thought can go towards the food itself. The foods you eat and how you eat them reveal a lot about you. Check out list of foods to avoid on a first date if you're keen to maintain an air of class or you're simply hoping for a kiss.

Pasta

Everyone remembers the classic spaghetti dinner scene where Lady and the Tramp eat opposite ends of a single stand of spaghetti only to meet in the middle. However, spaghetti can be more of a nightmare than fun. You'll know what I mean if you've even had to slurp spaghetti strands from your plate. You're also likely to end the meal with tomato sauce stains splattered over your shirt or blouse a la Dexter.

Sea food

Shellfish are delicious, healthy but notoriously hard to eat. You'll have to wrestle your way into clams and mussels. Be prepared to dismember crabs and crayfish and suck the watery flesh from their little bodies. Remember, there's a reason why fishmongers smell of fish.

Burritos

Burritos are the new craze from Las Vegas to London and Sydney. However, eating one is messy no matter how skilled you are with your mouth and fingers. Burritos usually leak from underneath or burst in places you least expect, dripping guacamole sauce and cream over your fingers.

Beans

The English like their beans on toast and Americans with cornbread. However, beans won't do you or your partner any favors. Bacteria living in your intestines break down complex carbohydrates found in beans and other vegetables - in the process, they release copious amounts of carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane. Most people fart between 1 and 3 pints per day. Your date can do without that!

Cheeses

Wine and cheese go hand in hand with the perfect dinner date. However, some cheeses smell so bad they can make your dirty socks smell like designer fragrance. Camembert, Stilton and Pont l'Eveque are amongst the worst offenders. As a rule of thumb, stay away from raw milk cheeses if you're keen for tongue action later in the night.

Haggis

Haggis isn't for the faint hearted: it's a traditional Scottish dish containing sheep's heart, liver and lungs wrapped in the animal's stomach. For the uninitiated, Haggis can smell strong and vile. Others love it and call it an acquired taste. It's one of those foods that can leave bits stuck between your teeth. You'll want to avoid it like the plague on a first date unless your partner is into the same!
